You only get rep if someone gives it to you... I don't think it is really pointless, it shows the popularity of someone.

Click on "user cp" on the top, there should be a list of people that gave you rep.

Well what I mean is that noone gives rep reguarly. But you won't have a problem getting rep Mr Cool, you are "cool" after all aren't you?
