I've had GIFs as avatars in the past, but now my new one is not animating. Was this disabled or something? Or just something with my specific GIF?

and the size be like 125x125 or even 120x120

Maybe it's duration is too long and it means file size. Try to upload to imgur or something and set as a link to that image.
