@Dave erase the white background with the magic eraser tool or select it with the wand too and erase, then save as .png. The end.

I do that with cartoon images. Everything else I use the polygonal lasso.

Well, yeah. Cartoon-y images are the easiest at getting that done. If you're doing it with people or stills, polygonal lasso is a must.

OR you can outline them with the 'pen tool', make them the 'selection' and copy them elsewhere - or invert what I said and select the background and delete it.
