In photoshop, use the magic wand, select the white, delete it, save as a .gif file.

It does suck the first time you use it, but they have the good stuff hidden deep into the toolbar, and they have the crap visible right when you turn it on...

Actually, GIMP is pretty much a less flashy photoshop. It DOES work just as well, but because I know where everything is in PS and its terms, GIMP is difficult for me to navigate.
