Damn, I missed the spammy crap also.  A year ago, we had all the spam anyone could want, and then some.

I think we have some assholes that are trying.  If you look to see who's online, there are a ton of guests "logging in" or "activating their account".  Half of them never surface for some reason but most of the time the "newest member" has a very obvious spam name.

Yeah, seen that. The member count has fluctuated quite a bit from the old days as well to the point that I hardly ever look at that part.  Really, should be if someone don't post in say, 2 years or so, that should inactivate the account or something.

That seems to be a problem for many forums.  About 70% of the members have 0 posts.  Why the hell bother signing up?  So to all you lurkers out there that may be reading this, we know you're out there!  Sign up! We could use some more active people around here....

That's a hallmark of lots of boards.  Maybe they should make it so you have to at least make a post to show up on the member list.

Remember that one kid who did his first and only post 3 years after he signed up here, asking DGAF to de-activate his account ?

We don't know where Scott is, he hasn't been online in....forever.

It asks us to approve a lot of the accounts. A lot of them have IP address known for spamming. I check the email addresses, the usernames and the IPs. If they look spammy, I reject the accounts.

Some do slip through, though. Like the one above did.

Oh, I get it now.  That would explain the shit-load of people trying to sign up.
