Gary Smith: Why is he doing that? WHY?

Don't know if something like this has been made before but I keep finding Gary walking around New Coventry and Blue Skies. This doesn't involve any modding whatsoever. It's odd. I also saw Bob walking around Blue Skies once. I beat him up but then got busted and never saw him again.

EDIT: Yeah, you caught me out on the Bob thing. I modded him in on PC once and he disappeared after one day. Sorry for the trouble.

I've heard of Gary appearing in that area and I've experimented a lot with trying to get him to spawn there but I've never had it happen. I can't help but wonder if it's a rumor or just extremely rare.

I don't believe your Bob story, however.

I've heard numerous people say that Gary spawning happens in the original game (PS2) and/or in older copies of the PS2 game (NOT Greatest Hits). I've spent so much time trying to get his stupid ass to appear in the original game that I can't help but think it's false. Is there even any proof on the 'Tube or some pictures or something? I don't feel like or care enough to look...

I've never heard of Bob appearing so...

Bob ?  I've never seen Gary in free roam, let alone Bob on my PS2 version.

The Gary bug is a very rare one, which I've only heard reports of it happening on the PS2 version. (Possibily the PSN version too, as that is the same game)

The Bob one however, is bullshit.


That brings me to another thing, I think it's possible to meet (most) people in free roam without mods, though some are difficult.

There might be some kind of mission that you can fail right after Gary has spawned, where Rockstar forgot to despawn him.

Yeah, I wasn't being serious about Bob.
However, looking online lead me to believe that Gary spawned after failing Slingshot. I don't recall, though, as this is a really old save.

I think I saw a PS2 video where someone was showing off how they found Gary in freeroam.
It might just be a HxD mod or something, but still impressive for PS2.

I have this game on three platforms - PS2, PSN  and PC. He never appeared once on the PS2 edition - although, I don't think I ever failed Slingshot. On the PC, I know that he won't appear as the glitch was fixed. On the PSN one however, he has appeared. Pretty odd idea that they didn't port the Greatest Hits edition, which basically fixed a few of the bugs from the original. Either way, I'm glad to have seen this glitch. I only very occasionally see him, too; he isn't there every time. I also heard that beating up Pete would permanently spawn him but I think - not unlike the Bob thing I made up - that it's a total lie.

This is something unrelated - I found an old, locked thread on here that said that if you change Jimmy from "PLAYER1"  in ide.img to "STUDENT" a weird glitch may happen enabling you to play as another character with all their stats. Might have to try that.

I know you can encounter him in free roam:


- After "Slingshot" if you're quick enough, you can catch up with him and he'll roam around like a normal NPC.

- Start "That Bitch" without stinkbombs. Gary will tell Jimmy where to get stinkbombs from, after this, he'll roam around like a normal NPC and can be knocked out with getting a mission failed.

- Halloween, after beating all errands, he and Petey will be at your side.

- The Big Prank, very hard to do, but possible, after Mr. Burton steps on the dog shit, Gary will be in the school but will most likely run into a classroom or you'll have to run away from Mr. Burton.

I know for a fact that I always tried to beat him up on the Halloween mission. As a result of this, I doubt I ever did the Big Prank. I always knocked him out whenever possible.
I haven't actually seen him since the other day, which is frustrating.

I have had this happen to be before on the original Ps2 version. After the mission when you destory stuff in the Spencer Warehouse I went to save my game in the Dropout's place. Around like 3:15 I notice two kids fighting outside next to the bus stop. Its Gary and Sheldon, imagine my surprise! O_O;

The fight didn't last long because Gary punch the shit out of Sheldon and the cops came to bust em.
