kick me problem

I'm playing on PC vista, and come the Halloween challenge, can't slap a 'kick me' sign on the kid's back. I'm behind him, and the prompt is saying left shift, but it won't let me.

I don't know whether I can't get near enough, or if it's another glitch.

Suggestions?
