INFO:

It's hard to write about Rockstar's latest schoolyard bruiser, Canis Canem Edit (formally known as Bully) and not make comparisions to the studio's other free-roaming action series, Grand Theft Auto.

To be fair, Canis' is a bit more Grange Hill than The Sopranos, but it does share many often-overlooked traits with the acclaimed crime-em-up, like a massive and varied mission structure, well-penned and hilarious characters and a game world we could easily lose ourselves in for an entire weekend. Indeed, from what we've sampled we reckon this could be the best game to exit Rockstar's doors in... well, since GTA.

Advertisement:Swinging open the school gates, we were recently granted an unrestricted play-through of the first few hours of Canis', which included the entire first chapter and a portion of the second.

In case you've missed it thus far, the game plays out the story of unfortunate schoolboy Jimmy Hopkins, a 15-year-old ginger hoodlum who's been expelled from every school he's ever been to. Which brings us swiftly to Bullworth Academy, the bully-filled boarding school Jimmy's been dumped at by his mother and her upteenth husband.

Essentially, it's the game we all dreamed of playing when we were teenage tear-aways; Bullworth has all the usual traits of a regular school like woodwork lessons, cafeteria and bundles, except in Canis Canem Edit you can strut the halls chatting up girls, beating-up bullies and throwing bricks through your English teacher's windows without fear of real life detention.

An early mission introduces me to the Canis hoodlum gameplay nicely, tasking me with fetching a tearful fat girl's stolen chocolates. In every part of the school prefects patrol the halls and will quickly drag you to the principle's office if you're up to no good. This is all determined by the trouble meter situated in the top right of your display; the meter will rise depending on the severity of your mischief. Headbutting a teacher, for example will land you in the red-zone, with no chance of a button-mashing escape from the prefect's clutches.

This particular mission leads me through the halls to the boys lavatory where our chocolate hoodlum is scoffing his loot. A swift punch to the chest hands over the sweets, but thanks to an overlooking teacher I'm now the attention of every spying authority. You can use the HUD map very effectively to avoid falling into the gaze of a prefect, whos cone vision is provided on-screen, and when locked in a pursuit there's plenty of bins lying around for you to dive into, putting you into a first-person spy-perspective to make sure you're in the clear.

Combat itself works really well. Simple combos start you off on a gentle learning curve, chaining up punches, throws and grapples for various effects. As you progress in the game you'll learn new moves from gym class and an ex-solider tramp living behind a school bus, who'll teach you headbuts and uppercuts in exchange for radio parts scattered through-out the world. Keeping with the spirit of the game, there are also 'humiliation moves' that you can perform when your opponent is on his last legs - like making them punch themselves or spitting in your hands and wiping it in their faces. Schoolyard classic, that one.

To me, the most impressive part of Canis though is the amount of work Rockstar has put into making each character unique. There are over 100 different characters in the game, each with their own names, voices an personalities, who you will get to know through missions and fetching tasks. After a few hours, running through the halls I could spot different students immediately. It's cliched, but Canis works ways into creating a living, breathing school.

And of course to create a believable schoolyard their has to be social segregation, and its one of the main gameplay themes in Canis Canem Edit. There are four social groups in the game - the nerds, the preps, the greasers and the jocks. Similar to the gang system in GTA: San Andreas, you can gain respect with the different groups by helping them out and performing various missions. Seeing as I was in particularly bad favour with the jocks, they were often trying to start fights with me in the playground, though thankfully, my nerd friends would assist me with me with rock-hard rugby tackles - just like in real life.

Another great aspect of Canis is how the chapters and missions move the school term along. One mission I got to sample in the first chapter took place at Haloween, where I got myself a fetching skeleton outfit and headed out to cause mischief. Canis goes no-bounds in providing you with toys and gadgets to get up to no good. Stink bombs and teacher-tripping marbles were my favourite, but most expressing the world's interactivity are the skate board - which you can pull out at any time and pull-off tricks - and footballs, which are surprisingly manouverable.

As you'd expect from Rockstar, Canis Canem Edit is also clogged full of the studios' infamous brand of humour. I managed to log a few of my favourite moments, which included a student challenging me to a "nut-kicking contest," Jimmy's champion chat-up line: "want to study... anatomy?" and schoolyard quip "hey Hopkins, you psychotic gimp."

Impressively, there's much more to Canis Canem Edit than I saw in my 3-hour play session. In one of my last missions, I got to explore outside of the school and inside the surrounding town - Bullworth's dinner lady's request for more meat ("otherwise I'll have to put another one of Mrs. Jones' cats in the stew") led me to the butcher shop on her bike, and then to the barbers where I managed to get a fetching mullet-cut, and finally to the tailors, where I got a hat to hide my mullet.

It'd really hard, pedling through the town's streets, to avoid comparision to GTA. There's cars, there's shops and there's even police bikes that chased me down when I managed to egg a pedestrian. It will certainly be exciting to see where gameplay outside of Bullworth takes us.

So there you have it. The opening hours of Canis Canem Edit left us impressed, and hopeful for open-ended gameplay rivalling even GTA in terms of potential mischief. Thankfully, we've only got a month to wait before the game hits the streets - stay tuned for our official verdict coming very soon.

"Menace to society or just misunderstood?"

PICS:

INFO:

GTA Jr.:

First, let's clear something up: Bully both is and isn't Grand Theft Auto in a school. It uses the GTA game engine, so anyone familiar with those games should have an easy time navigating Bullworth Academy and the surrounding town. But while it's a mission-based, free-roaming adventure, you can't jack cars in Bully. You can't mug people, and you can't use deadly weapons or kill anyone. No hookers, sex or blood, either.

So, is Bully the dangerous game everyone says it is? Only if you think Bart Simpson is a violent cancer on society.

We've already covered  a lot of the basics of publisher Rockstar's high-school simulator, in which a hard-nosed young tough named Jimmy Hopkins gets sent to the only boarding school left that'll take him. But after being given free rein with a finished copy of the game, we've come away with a more complete picture of what you can expect this October.

The game begins with Jimmy getting dumped at Bullworth by his serial-marrying mother, and after some violent new-kid hazing by the school bullies, he's befriended by a twitchy, overmedicated little Svengali named Gary. Gary's obsessed with "taking over the school," and he represents what everyone seems to think Bully is about: remorseless, sociopathic hatred. So it's fairly obvious even from the start that he's destined to be the game's villain.

Until then, the first chapter ping-pongs between helping out with Gary's cruel pranks - which help familiarize you with the school - and protecting a clique of nerdy kids from the school's jocks and bullies (for a fee, of course).

Stand and deliver:

The protect-the-nerds missions were pretty straightforward; in one, Jimmy runs bodyguard duty for a fat kid who's afraid to go to his locker alone, while in another he plays sniper (with a slingshot) to keep jocks from throwing eggs at a knock-kneed school-president candidate. But our favorite missions were the ones Jimmy's forced to pull by lanky geek queen Beatrice, which involve stealing back her science notes for a cheerleader and stealthing it into the teacher's lounge to grab her confiscated diary.

In between taking on missions and dodging the school's prefects (who, unlike GTA 's cops, can't easily be taken down or avoided), we also got offered a few mini-missions from random students who approached us. Depending on who's asking, these usually range from shy "please deliver this note for me" errands to less-adorable "please push three kids into lockers for me" tasks. You're free to ignore any of these, but a quick payday is always nice.

Of course, the best things in life are free - "best things" in this case meaning the flowers you can pick outside the girls' dorm. Offer these flowers to a girl you're friendly with, and you can get a kiss. And you want to get kissed, because a girl's kiss serves the same purpose in this game that body armor does in GTA, boosting your health past 100% and letting you take some bonus damage. These start out as simple pecks, but depending on how much progress you've made in art class (don't ask), they get more and more makey-outy, as well as more protective.

Another thing that's free? Jimmy's skateboard. You'll earn it in an early mission, and you can pull it out at any time to get around campus a lot faster. It's useful, but not as much as the jackable bikes and scooters you'll find in the surrounding town. But those don't show up until chapter two.

Eat the rich:

The first of the game's five chapters comes to a close with Gary showing his true colors and Jimmy getting the leader of the bullies to agree to leave weaker kids alone. So now that the nerds are more or less safe, it's time to move on to the outlying town of Bullworth and a far more irritating clique: the preppies.

When you think "preppie" in Bully, don't think "shops at Abercrombie & Fitch." Think blue-blooded prick who brags nasally about his dad's law firm. Just like the bad guys in Animal House, these phonies are begging to be taken down a few pegs. And you'll get to, because they love to box.

If you liked Punch-Out!!, you'll find Bully 's boxing minigame easy to get used to. Unlike the game's brawling, the boxing has a simple rhythm: just block your opponent's weaker punches, wait for him to telegraph a stronger punch, duck out of the way and slam him with a flurry when his guard is down.

Master that, and you'll find it easy to win the Preppie Challenge mission, a boxing tournament that ends with Jimmy getting his own beach house. Aside from containing a fully 3D arcade game that plays like a simplified WipeOut, the house is useful for when you're in town late at night and just need a quick place to crash. And given that there are bus stops all over town - which take you to school instantly - you don't need to worry about missing classes, either.

Meet the faculty:

There's more to the second chapter than just the town and the preppies, too. This is where the game really starts to open up, and so you'll get to know the faculty a little better. Believe it or not, they're not all bad; Mr. Galloway, for example, is a dedicated English teacher. Unfortunately he's also a lush, so you'll need to hide his bottles so he doesn't get fired. And despite being a cackling old harridan, the lunch lady's OK, and the fetch mission she sends you on - for things like rancid meat to put in meals - does a lot to help you learn the town's layout.

Regardless of its missions, Bully is a game with a lot going on under the hood. The world is smaller than GTA's, but it also feels a lot more intimate, and the characters behave more like actual people than faceless targets. Hell, even the crazy hobo out behind the school is fun to hang out with. And the game's weird early-'60s vibe - which comes through in its fashions, music and anachronistic cliques - gives it an atmosphere that's somewhere between The Catcher in the Rye and Animal House.

We also liked trying out the various social interactions, which range from sneaking up and giving people wedgies (or unwelcome pats, in the case of girls) to immediately apologizing for having done so. There's a lot more to the game that we can't really talk about yet, but we aren't disappointed by what we've seen so far.

For those that don't know or remember Lazlow, he participated in every GTA as radio host, personally i like his performance in GTA III as chatterbox host :D

New pics and info from Games Radar about the bullies:

Bully bully:

No school would be complete without at least one bully, and Bullworth Academy is well stocked. You might even say it's over-stocked, loaded with thick-headed goons who's only purpose in life is to harass everyone else until they graduate and suddenly realize how shallow and empty their life really is. Not that we have any personal issues here...

Nomads:

It’s pretty easy to spot a bully at Bullworth Academy - they dress in a plain white shirt and tend to be the ones shouting at you and trying to stuff you into a trash can. Bullies don’t restrict themselves to any one particular spot on campus, lurking wherever they can throw the odd insult or noogie the way of the unsuspecting.

Top dog:

As leader, Russell Northrop is as dumb as they come, as big as a house and leads by example picking on pretty much any student that crosses his path. Our earlier hands-on  introduced us to Russell, who may not quite understand why he's such a jerk, but sure knows when to back off - when he's swallowing his own teeth.

Run-in:

It’s safe to say that Jimmy could well have some sort of run-in with a bully or two during his year at Bullworth. The bullies are always ready with a "friendly" greeting for any newcomer and like to pay particular attention to anyone arriving with a reputation for being tough. Unlucky for Jimmy, he happens to have such a reputation.

He started it:

The bullies are pretty dumb, but generally not quite dense enough to pick on anybody in front of an authority figure. But if they are that stupid, then that’s even better - you can watch them getting busted and dragged off to the Principal’s office. Of course, those rules apply to you too. Don't start any fights you're not prepared to win, cover up or escape punishment for instigating.

Respect:

It's never easy dealing with these obnoxious morons, but as Jimmy you will discover that your actions, be they positive or negative, could even change the way that the bullies treat you throughout the school year. A life long friendship will not come out of any communication you have with the bullies, but they may have a new found respect towards you before school’s out for the summer.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New info and screenshots from IGN about the mini-games of BULLY:

INFO:

The Mini-Games of Bully: Part 1

Bullworth Academy pride themselves in rigidly sticking to the curriculum at all times, to this end consistent truancy will result in punishment. The esteemed staff of the Academy, though occasionally questionable in their recreational habits, ensure that the pupils have a firm grounding in the key academic subjects. Alongside the strict principals of loyalty, trust and ruthless ambition that are ingrained in every pupil in the academy by the principal Dr Crabblesnitch, core subjects include English, Gym, Shop Class, Photography, Art and Chemistry. Each subject comprises a series of five tests to be passed with flying colors. Of course on passing each test a due reward, in the form of gameplay features will be earned by the player. Bullworth Academy's educational system is provided through a host of exciting and innovative mini games lovingly developed by Rockstar Vancouver to accompany the main storyline of Bully.

Chemistry

Chemistry classes involve the creation of complex chemical compounds through intricate button combinations pressed in a timely manner. Through the school year Mr. Watts will test students in the lab, good marks will earn them the formula for items such as firecrackers, stink bombs and itching powder.

Art

Bullworth Academy imbues students with as much hunger for cultural pursuits as they have for academia. Art classes provide the students with the skills to produce works eligible for adorning the most prestigious of gallery walls. A refreshing take on a much loved classic puzzle arcade game fits the bill perfectly for this class.

Gym

Gym class is the perfect arena for Bullworth Academy students to develop the grit and determination needed to claw their way to the top of the pile. The highly finessed and easy to use combat system is gradually unlocked through some serious wrestling matches and passionate games of dodge ball.

Photography

Advanced photography techniques can lead to Jimmy being equipped with the latest technology to take snapshots all over Bullworth town and increase his ability to take photos for the school yearbook.

English

With 30 years of teaching under his belt, Mr. Galloway feels confident enough to let his classes run themselves through challenging word scrambles from which the player must create as many grammatically precise words as possible to expand his vocabulary.

Shop Class

Only by understanding how machines function can we truly grasp their value to humanity. Focusing on the mechanics of the BMX, keen attendance at shop class can amount to significant improvements to one of the player's prime modes of transport.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

INFO:

Rich bitches:

Bullworth Academy is home to a wide range of children from a mixture of social backgrounds. Most of the pupils reside in the dorms. However, if your parents can prove their wealth, you may be granted admission to Harrington House. The most popular way of ensuring your place in those hallowed halls is a large cash donation.

Flying fists:

If you can't find them in school, they're most likely to be at the boxing gym. Keen pugilists to a man, the preppies are not to be messed with. They fight fast and they fight hard - and they're very nimble on their feet. Once you've won favor with the preppies, they may even invite you to train at their gym. Here you can learn to defend yourself and also enter a boxing tournament with a spectacular prize.

Style time:

The preppies like to distinguish themselves from their fellow students. They favor the finest cashmere sweaters from Aquaberry, safe in the knowledge that they're the only students that will be able to afford 'em. You'll also be able to hear their distinct accents braying from a mile away. You'll want to keep an eye out for their stylish accessorizing - who else could pull off a cravat with school uniform?

Pompous ass:

The preppies universally look up to their figurehead, Derby Harrington. His own great-grandfather had the opulent Harrington House built for him while he was a pupil at the school - the other dormitories were simply not up to standard. Since those days, every Harrington child has passed through Bullworth.

Not for you:

Access to Harrington is strictly limited and the students themselves enforce this policy of exclusion. Set in its own grounds, the imposing building provides not just accommodations, but extensive recreational facilities. Taking a baroque approach to interior design, the stuffed trophies and suits of armor lend Harrington House a distinctly graceful ambience.

Extra credit:

There's also a glorious conservatory on the upper floor, where some of the keener horticulturalists can exercise their talents. Members of Harrington House also have a beautiful beach house available for their use. When the preppies can't be found in Harrington House or at their beach house, they're probably in town maxing out daddy's credit card.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

According to an article from Games Radar, Bully's name will remain the same in the US, but in Europe R* changed Bully's name to Canis Canem Edit (Bullworth Academy's motto).

I hope this isn't true, i really don't like the new name and i don't see a reason to change the game's name.
