Title: Bully: Scholarship Edition MEGA-MOD - Status Thread
Post by: MadmaN on October 21, 2014, 02:27:17 AM
Ok...

Figured I would get this started since I have focused ALL of my attention to doing the much anticipated MEGA-MOD which will be a first for the community as well as something that will give the game a lot of replay value.

Atm I am focusing on creating a safe enviroment for texture creation/testing in order to speed up the process instead of the grueling task of testing in-game as most modders do.

I have spent the past three days so far FULLY recreating the entire bully world map in 3ds max and have some pics to share of this rather large task due to what I have had to go through in order to get this to a usable stage.

As most of you know the game has a LOT of individual models from the exterior stuff to all of the interiors and their props and this makes for a LOT of work for anyone wanting to attempt modding on this sort of scale. This mini project of recreating the bully world map in 3ds serves me TWO purposes. First is to use as a development platform for texture testing and the secondary purpose is to use with my renders that I will be creating at the same time that go with a zombie apocalypse story series I will be writing based off of a continuing dream I have had of which I have already wrote a small bit about in the weird dreams thread which some of you will likely remember.

For the renders part I will be redoing EVERYTHING in the map in ultra HD as far as the models go and there is a lot of merging and new textures that will have to be made due to merging various objects....as well as injecting every single interior directly INTO all of the building structures on the map with workable doors...etc as well as jumping up their poly counts to a higher level and adding things that happen to be missing.

I have most of the world map reconstructed at this stage but still need to add other things back to this such as doors for the exterior stuff....some of the landscape is still missing and around 140 textures are missing from the final shot I will be linking in this post. While I do have every texture used in the game it is a pain figuring out which textures are for which item since as everyone knows, nothing is named as it should be in the game and one object can have 4 different names...but still referencing the same thing...which leads to a lot of confusion specially with texture and model modding.

I also will release this as a texture development system for those that use 3ds max and wish to use this for their own textures as this method makes for a great way to mod textures without the time hassle of constantly messing with the .img archives in order to test a single texture or several at a time.

At a later date when I have enough of these compiled...I will release also a full set of texture templates for every game texture that also will aid in scratch made textures along with seam guides as well which I will explain another time....since texturing is a VERY exact process and for a texture to look good without any visible seams...you have to know exactly where the seams start and end.

I will update this topic periodically on the status of this project and I will state NOT to expect a x-mas release even though I am shooting for a pre-release of just the textures only for the MEGA-MOD and then add the rest in installments as this will be a rather large mod...and hosting for this will be a problem since I still have to talk to AJ about seeing if he will grant permission to host it here due to its size that is projected to be around 5+ gb when I get finished with it.

Think of this as MY version of the fakefactory mod for hl2...only for BULLY instead.

Please keep in mind that I did NOT merge any of the individual models into one giant mesh. I have kept them seperate since I intend fully on modifying every single one of them and hope to turn all of this into full HD...no idea if the game will support that yet or not but I can only try.

EDIT

I appreciate the compliments :) but I will state that the render I posted above is NOT the mega-mod in any way shape or form...but my test bed for DEVELOPING the mega-mod and also to use with my renders.

The bully game engine likely will not be able to support anywhere near what you will see in my renders due to the insanely high poly counts of the scenes I work with and the texture sizes as well.

Both vehicles in that render above are well over 700k poly and the characters inside are each twice that in poly counts so...don't confuse the renders with screenshots from mega-mod....I probably will not be at a good enough screenshot stage for mega-mod for a few weeks at least and this will ONLY be for the textures....modifications of the models will happen as i can get them done and only if the game engine even will support them...which even I do not know fully yet.

Zombie Edition of Bully was never actually cancelled.

The zombie renders I am doing however are NOT for the game at all and are actually for a small story I am going to write and put here...comic book style but using my renders....to tell a story based on some dreams I had where I was a student at bullworth and the school came under a zombie attack (similar to high school of the dead) and two of my novel characters (meiyo and yu) are present as well as all of the bully characters...and a few people I know on xfire from here too.

I am using this as the test bed for the MEGA-MOD as well as a development platform for those renders too. Basicly this is a dual purpose deal which is why this is posted here in the modding section rather then elsewhere....since everything you see in the renders as far as textures goes...and world map modifications will be brought over to the game itself as best as I can do it.

^ Could be porting the Bully map to another game.

Nope.

Heh.....I generally just get straight to the point anyways when I post something.

I did consider porting the bully map to another game but it is just too much of a bother for me to do that and more work then I can handle anyways since I already have a lot of work lined up for the game in general.

I plan to post another render tonight sometime which will show my latest improvements to teh textures as well as one scene from the zombie story I am quickly doing. Taking a break anyways from my main book I am doing since I don't want to get burnt out.

Here are some updates.....what you are about to see is everything loaded in 3ds max itself...using 3ds max 2014 for those interested and none of these shots show modded textures...not yet anyways.

I am reconstructing EVERYTHING in 3ds max as one whole world..including interiors and this is proving to be a healthy challenge. I am surprised no-one has attempted this yet. Got this feeling I am the first for this one...rofl.

All of this will be released at some point before xmas for others to use to develop their own textures to import into the game. This as I said above is the main reason why I am doing this, but I am also doing this for the zombie story renders and btw Chuck....I can use this to do renders for the NES for you as well if you want. Once I have freetime that is.

Now...on to the progress screenshots for everyone:

Here is the current stage of the full world map...it is pretty big and sorta a strain for me to work with due to all the tiny 'pieces' as everything was manually imported and positioned as close as I could remember. Been a while since I played the game so feel free to let me know if I have placements wrong on anything. I do NOT have everything put in just yet...but almost.

Next up is a shot of the school interiors from the outside. I have almost everything placed as far as rooms go...the only things missing in this shot is the auditorium since I have to modify that to remove the control booth from the mesh..as it interferes with the school walls....add in the basement fully which ....needs modifications to line up proper and not interfere with the rooms and walls....and finish adding missing classrooms...

I am also adding in the nurses office too as the beta had that but they removed it. easy enough to do since I can just use a generic classroom model as the base and go from there.

The shot above is not in 3ds max btw..but using a custom version of poser which is what I use for posing my custom characters in my scenes...which I then export to use either with renderman studio or lux...whatever I feel in the mood for using at the time.

next up is a shot showing part of the school interior...namely part of the lobby and the school store. I do not have the props added in yet nor do I have doors added in since those are seperate models with animations...kinda a pain to export correctly for use here.

Here is another shot inside the lobby

Next up is the full basement. Still missing a few minor details and missing a part of one room that I somehow forgot...but I will fix that soon.

Next up is the girls dorm:

Here is the exterior shot of the interior itself....

Now for the inside of it...I do not have the props added in yet but a lot of this I am planning to redo in ultra high definition....however I have no idea if the game will be able to handle the type of modeling that I do so....this is a nice challenge for me.

What are all the white structures on the upper left of the main world map, between the school and Blue Skies ?  Are they to represent mountains ?
The building with the 3 smokestacks should be Gloop Oil, to the left of it should be the round Chem-O-Lot plant.
I take it the separate part at top left is the Asylum, and the separate one at top right is maybe the Go-Cart track...(?)
But what is the separate one at the top middle represent ?

The Basement & Girl's Dorm interiors look absolutely awesome.
One render, (the ground floor hallway, the first interior of the Girls Dorm), would be perfect for an NES render of Tony saving Karen a second before the bomb blast in Chapter 1.  I have ideas for others (1 per chapter) that I will PM you about.  One will be in front of the school, and one behind (both looking towards the school), but both occurred at night (not total darkness), and one is with a snowstorm.

The Basement & Girl's Dome interiors look absolutely awesome.

The white areas are the hills, rock formations, grassy areas. They are white because I am missing those specific textures and just never added them in yet.

The interiors most certainly DON'T match the exterior buildings they are part of so I have no simple way of combining one without redoing the other. I will try this however and see what happens.

This is a example of what I mean.

I removed the school exterior building and placed the interiors structure where the school building was....keep in mind that this is exactly to scale too and this shows that there is no possible way for these interiors with their layout to fit in that building. Just is not possible.

I was trained in school as a architect and have a degree for this....and I know this area VERY well.

Here is a overhead shot showing both the school building in its normal position and the interiors placed behind it. Notice the differences in the shape and size?

Yes, I can see that !  Not totally unexpected, probably other buildings could be like that also.
Regardless, it is an awesome project !

When I get it done.

I am trying to get the textures done so I can release that portion around xmas...but I can't promise that I will be able to release them then tho...since you have to realize...I am the ONLY one working on this and there are several thousand textures in this game....its a lot to change since I am replacing every single one. Plus putting in my full hd replacements for the characters in the game....hd vehicle replacements.....beta boys dorm will be reconstructed.....

I will not say any specific date and I will also please ask that everyone be patient with me as I do this mod. Anyone posting begging for me to release it now or release it early will just have their posts deleted since hammering me will just force me to slow down more or stop the mod totally. Patience is something I do want to teach a lot of the newer crowd here.

That is why most game devs rush shit out after they make a press release talking about what they are doing because the public demand become so great they get pressured to release it asap or they fear they will lose the popularity.

I could care less about that stuff since good things come to those who wait. If it takes a while then so be it. If people don't like that then they should move on to something else and the people that do care will still be around.

Those 3DS Max screenshots are awesome. When you say all of this will be released at some point before Christmas, do you mean the entire exported map for 3ds Max? That would be incredibly useful for all kinds of mods.

He is working hard to get these mods out as fast as possible. Knowing MadmaN he probably doesn't have a official release yet he doesn't like to give out early ETA's.

That's fair enough. I think you misunderstood me though - I wanted to clarify whether MadmaN meant he was planning to release his 3ds Max map files, because that's what it seemed like he meant in that post (I.e. in addition to the Mega Mod he is working on).

The 3ds max files will be released. I have been focusing on helping with the MP mod with the guys so have shoved this to the back seat for now. I still am working on things but have a lot of projects going on at once.
