In a place like Bullworth, if you're non-clique, you would be relentlessly picked on by the Bullies and ignored by the other cliques, in Bullworth, you'll need some protection.
Think of Bullworth Academy as a Prison (Which it is) you'll need protection, thus, you join a gang.
If you don't... You'll be the victim of the prison convicts, just like in Bullworth.
Joining a clique= Protection.

I'm actually a "former-Jock" - but not as in the school clique. In Scotland, "Jocks" is actually a reference for those in the Scottish regiments of the British Army. Granted, I was only in the Territorial Army, but I was with the Argylls - one of the most historic Scottish regiments of all. (If you've heard the saying "The thin red line", thank the Argylls for it...)
In terms of cliques, I'd probably fit in best with the nerds, but being the way I am I'd probably stay non-clique.

Besides the Jocks... I wouldn't be too keen on slicking my hair back and looking like I'm stuck in the 50s (No matter how much I love the Greasers) if I did, I guess I'd be like Lucky (In fashion sense) as he hasn't got the slicked back hair and 'Greaser' look.

Bullies.
In order to not get picked on, you must pick on others. I may not like it (altough I do tend to tease about 5 to 6 people in my school, 7 of which are teachers). It gives me a sence of pride and makes me feel dominant over others. Fuck yeah.
One thing though is that I'd NEVER threaten anyone. Nor cross the line to use violence, unless I get provoced. One person in my class is named Deividas. He calls himself David and insists that others do so as well. Because of the fact that he is so insistant, me and my friend usually call him "Gayvidas" or "DeyIvas" <-- Ivas is a class for people who go in small classes for extra help. Yeah yeah I know. I'm a jerk.
My victims:
Mårten (Teacher)
We call out "Murteeeeeeeeeen" everytime we see him.
We also tend to be rude to him, one time our class got cancelled and people were bummed for some reason. So he said "It's seems that everyone here is pretty annoyed", my friend replied "Yeah, it's because you showed up" and we laughed at him.
Jerzy (Teacher)
He's slow. I mean SLOOOOOOOW. And when you talk to him, he tends to randomly SCREAM. My friend went up to him and said "Hey, Jerzy." and he shouted out "HEEEEEEYYY!!!!!!!".
So we tend to pick on him and impersonate him.
Deividas (Student)
We tend to pick on him through simple bad comments.
It's fun and he's actually quite stupid. He also calls women objects, smoking good and doesn't like Christians. So yeah..
Nyström (Student)
This guy is actually beginnin to go over to my good side as we tend to consersate in a friendly manor when Deividas, his friend is not around. Everytime this guy disses his friend, he earns my respect.
Moa (Student)
We call this chick "MOOOOOOO" as her name is close to it and Jerzy (the teacher) tend to pronounce her name "Mooooaah".
Morgan (Student)
His alone. And awkward. That's what makes it fun to talk crap about him.

Yeah, we're both fans of ICP, play Bully and we like to harass others.
Anyway, I do Bully because it makes me feel tougher, safer and at the same time it stops others from picking on me. Often times, bullies don't harass other bullies (though I don't necessaraly call myself a bully, more just a jerk).
If you're alone, sad and stupid then yeah. People are going to pick on you. No doubt about that.
But if you're secure, surrounded by others and have on problem with being a jerk now and then, the risks aren't really that big of you getting picked on.
If I didn't pick on others, I'd have been picked on long ago. I actually have been, but I ended up beating the shit out of the person who harassed me. Not the best solution, but hey. It works.
And when I'm seen being a dick towards others and people whom I like talk to me, I'm very friendly towards them. This usually leads them to be even friendlier towards me as it shows greater how I feel about them.

But to be honest bro, picking on people smaller than you may make you feel as if you're a 'tough guy' but it's all an illusion. I've seen it before, I never did it first hand because I didn't really do it much (Besides a few friendly teases here and there) but I saw a few friends do it, I kind of drifted away from them because I decided they weren't the type of people I want to hang around with.
Although SWEG, make sure not to pick on the wrong people... One of my former 'Friends' decided to pick on someone his own size, and on the wrong day as well, he ended up with a few days off school staying on his back in his bed recovering, and a long suspension for them both.
Must say though, he got what was coming to him 8)

Well here's the thing, I think some of you are putting in what you'd be in real life rather than if you were in the Bullworth world.
The bullies aren't technically bullies when compared to the rest of the school. They are more like layabouts or bludgers or whatever the American equivalent is. Yeah, they bully non clique students, but so does everyone else. In terms of the storyline they don't seem to care too much about anything other than having a good time. I guess because they are the only clique who saw through Gary's obvious BS (or more likely didn't give a damn) and remained loyal to Jimmy that has a bit of an impact on my opinion.
I think the biggest factor in why the bullies aren't usual bullies is that they typically side with whoever has got power or appears to have power and Jimmy certainly didn't have it at that point in the story and I don't mean physical power like Russell has, I mean influence and popularity.
Frankly the nerds aren't the standard nerds in real life either. They are backstabbing scum and far more aggressive than most nerds and probably a big part of the reason they are picked on. It's not exactly like they can't fight back if they are armed. They aren't exactly intelligent either.
Some of the clique do fill the stereotypical role such as Bucky, Fatty and Cornelius but others like Algernon, Donald and obviously Earnest do not fill this at all and those have more power in the clique. Nerds tend to stick by those who have treated them well (because they generally have difficulty acquiring friends outside their social circle and hell even inside their social circle) and they did the exact opposite.
Having said all that, the Townies fit me the most. Despite constantly being told I was intelligent, school was pretty horrible for me because of all the social nonsense and I had to drop out. I identify with Duncan and Jerry pretty strongly.

The bullies are generally potrayed as the most evil scum in history, while in this game they're quite loyal to those who are loyal to them.
They surrender when you beat their biggest guy and they remain your somewhat friends throughout the entire game.

Haha I've kept an eye on things on the boards and just haven't felt like commenting. This caught my attention. I did get GTA 4 (SWING GLITCH!), I told you on Skype but I guess you haven't checked. I posted a similar wall you might enjoy reading in the GTA 4 section under the snow storm thread that Mike posted more than a year ago.

Very interesting observations. I wish that the Townies had played a larger role in the game. Hell they didn't even get their own chapter, since they had to share Chapter 5 with Gary and the four main cliques. D:

I get what you mean. Gary used the Townies because they were all he had left by Chapter 5. Its funny how he thinks that he's a genius but spends most of the game having his lame plans foiled and only succeeds because Jimmy and the others are even dumber than he is. :laugh:

The other characters hold idiot balls. That's the only way Gary's plans work. The townies were hardly used, they had nothing to lose by following him and its not like he had much connections to begin with. Derby didn't give a stuff about him, Tad did but he had no influence, Earnest is frankly an idiot, Johnny's only interaction with Gary is 'shut up Gary' and Gary is never seen talking with any of the jocks.
It really comes down to... 'Hey guys let's blame Jimmy for all our problems even though we don't have a shred of proof that he's responsible and has nothing to gain from it'. I'll grant you though Jimmy was acting like an ass at that stage and he did some things that go beyond idiotic to 'I'm doing this because the script says so'.
You might want to be careful bringing Gary up, it might trigger a lengthy essay or something but I've already done that somewhere here which I don't remember.

Does anyone think that the character would have worked better had they consolidated Gary and Petey into one person? In other words make him sarcastic like Gary but loyal like Petey throughout most of the game, not turning on Jimmy at the end of Chapter 1. It would've explained why Jimmy didn't go after Gary until he was expelled. Interestingly enough, Gary's monologue at the end would have still made sense.
Actually this what I thought in my restructure except Petey would still be in the story. The biggest problem with Gary is the fact Jimmy never has any reason to go after him when you know he's an enemy.
How do you resolve this? By not making him an enemy until absolutely necessary. This is only a very rough outline of the 'changes' but it's too long as is :P.
Simply put Gary would be made headboy in chapter 2's beginning though he has already set Jimmy up to face against Russell in the hole, though Jimmy has no idea who did that and who's spreading hearsay about what he is saying. Petey suspects Gary of something fishy but of course Jimmy as always never listens to Petey in regards to Gary.
However for Gary to keep 'order' within the cliques he uses Jimmy as his unofficial enforcer while at the same time (unknown to Jimmy obviously) gives them reasons to hate him. Jimmy then pacifies the cliques as he does in the main story. Petey is still Jimmy's 'guide' telling him to solve the problem that Gary sets out (and causes).
You might say at the end of chapter 4 is where Gary stops taking his meds. Gary then goes to the townies and gets their help to start causing problems. You ever wondered how Gurney got into the school and set the gym on fire? Gary. Not to mention there's a secret passageway inside the school by the asylum. It'd be pretty easy for him to get in undetected, especially with inside help.
Jimmy is of course accused of doing everything bad for exactly the same reason as normal. Because Gary said so. Except this time he is actually trustworthy at this point rather than a horrible liar which makes it far more believeable that people would listen to him.
This of course leads Jimmy to being expelled. Knowing that the townies caused his problems he seeks them out for a beating and upon beating Edgar the pair finally put the pieces together since Edgar realises he wasn't going to get to rule the school, or even continue to prank them because Gary had already achieved his goal of removing Jimmy and now they are an 'enemy' and therefore would no longer receive his inside help.
Then of course Gary carries out the finale as before, causing everyone to fight each other and 'turning the school into a battleground', just for kicks. He's obviously the insane lunatic now we all know and loathe :P.
A few simple changes and Gary goes from a horrible obvious see through liar who nobody would believe where the hero has to carry an idiot ball to make the plot work to a devious mastermind.
This is my own perspective: the clique leaders secretly hated Jimmy for embarrassing them in front of their goons and the whole school, and wanted revenge in Chapter 5. Gary and the Townies gave them an excuse to do what they already wanted to do: kick Jimmy's ass and terrorize the school. By the end, Gary is an afterthought (and a convenient scapegoat to blame their riot on).

I can't agree with that. Johnny cannot be classed as a villain because Jimmy clearly acts on him first for no good reason other than because the plot says so, Derby doesn't give a stuff about any of the politics and probably thinks its beneath him. He's an ass yes but not a villain in the strictest sense. Earnest, possibly but not a very good one and Ted has so little storyline presence aside being the stereotypical jock leader that he's not even worth mentioning.
Furthermore if they were looking for revenge because of their authority within their cliques being undermined beating Gary wouldn't resolve anything at the end of the game, yet it clearly does. The intention was clearly for them to be all played by Gary but its so clumsily done it just doesn't come off right at all.
Also the reboot you pulled out was one of two particular comments on Gary and why he's such a flawed character and how I'll never understand his popularity.

Irrelevant and I think the game is rated higher then that, it is at least in this country, 15+ if I'm not mistaken. I've seen great stories for things intended for 8 years or less. The most obvious example that comes to mind is the 2003 series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That had quite an interesting and even deep storyline at times (when it wasn't doing silly comic book super hero like based spin offs).
I just find it so incredibly odd that you have characters so detailed with loads of little details, each with their own backstories, things like Kirby's foot fetish and 'i'm totally not gay', Duncan's nerdy background and wish to fit in society or Ricky's girl problems. You can paint a lot of pictures with those things alone and they don't even come up in the main plot. Yet the main plot is full of plotholes and the villain is incredibly underdeveloped, it's just comes off as really odd to me...

I didn't mean that they were all manipulators who cared about school politics like Gary and Earnest. You're right, Derby probably felt that he was above all that, Johnny likely didn't care, and Ted only cared about winning the big game. But their basic personalities and attitudes would have brought them into conflict with each other and with Jimmy, even without Gary. (Derby's rich brat's snobbery, Johnny's mad jealousy, and Ted's boneheaded arrogance.) I really believe that Gary couldn't have forced them to do anything that they weren't planning to do anyway. He just gave them a way to turn on Jimmy while keeping their clique members' loyalty. By Chapter 5, Jimmy had become too popular and the four clique leaders were desperate to dethrone the 'king of the school' and restore their lost positions. I think that their cheering for Jimmy at the end of Chapter 5 was utter bullshit, just like their supposed loyalty to him was horseshit at the beginning of Chapter 5. The only difference was that Gary's plan had been foiled and now Jimmy also had the loyalty of the Townies and Crabblesnitch. If the story had continued past Chapter 5, I'm sure that the four clique leaders would have tried to get back at Jimmy again. So what I'm saying is that Earnest, Ted, Johnny, and Derby were equals of Gary's in terms of their pride and resentment of Jimmy rather than their desire to 'rule the school'. Only Gary (and Earnest) cared about that. ;)

Fair enough. I have to agree I've never understood that cheering scene either and even my 'walls of text' can't decrypt what they were trying to get at there other than creating a happy atmosphere in which nothing honestly changes aside from anything to do with Jimmy which wasn't his point at all.
Kinda a big reason why I wouldn't want Jimmy as protagonist again, he'd just worn out his welcome IMO. I wouldn't mind the second game being set at Bullworth just to tie up those loose ends (Which can be done if Gary and Jimmy don't exist in the plot otherwise it all goes to hell).
I mean sure the plot feels questionable at times but it falls spectacularly to pieces in chapter 5 once Gary has to actually be on screen to present his 'scheme' rather than be off screen to convince the audience how devious he isn't.

Agreed. If Rockstar returns to the Bullworth setting, Jimmy and Gary should not be in the game. Maybe mention that Jimmy's mother remarried (again) and dragged him off to another town (or even another country). Gary could possibly have a small part at the asylum. (shrug)

I wrote a tiny bit of a Bully 2 would be fic with a big plan and such and that's exactly what happens to those two. Jimmy only comes back at the end of the plot for 'dream match' (i.e anyone can fight anyone) fights in the hole and has minimal impact on the plot.
I just love the Bully 1 characters I wouldn't want to see them just disappear completely.

Even though it's rare nowadays, it brings a smile to my face when members converse over Bully, just as you two did just there.
