Bully Hearing Scheduled in Miami
October 2nd, 2006
Bully has a date in court with Jack Thompson.

The anti-game activist attorney has forwarded GP a hearing notice from Judge Ronald Friedman of Florida’s 11th Circuit Court, which covers Miami-Dade County. In that document Judge Friedman notifies Bully publisher Take-Two Interactive and retailers Wal-Mart and GameStop that a hearing will be held on October 11th

GamePolitics readers may recall that Thompson filed suit against Bully on August 15th, saying:

“Bully will lead to increased bullying in our schools… Marketing and selling a school bullying virtual reality simulator to school children… is preparing at-risk students here and elsewhere for another Columbine.”

During next week’s proceedings, the court is expected to hear legal arguments regarding Thompson’s unprecedented request to block the game’s release on October 17th.

Thompson amended his complaint on August 31st to, among other changes, include retailer GameStop as a defendant.

The controversial Miami attorney posted the hearing notice in the comments section of a recent Joystiq article.

Don't worry about it guys, he is just a little man who wants publicity.

The judge will realise this and then sentence him to death.

Like I said before, it makes me sick that this twat is using a great tragedy like Columbine to work to his advantage - when really it has fuck all to do with the game.

Columbine simulator - give me a break - its just a tactic to try and get support and using those kids' lives as leverage for support.. fucking asshole

Bully can not be a Columbine simulator. The guys that killed pupils in Columbine used guns. Guns does not exist in Bully. Neither does killing. They went on a killing spree and killed innocent bullied kids. In Bully you stand up for the bullied kids.

As the article says, eventually he'll just sink under. If people quit pouring gasoline on him everytime he comes out to make a statement, he'll begin to realize that no one really cares anymore and just slip back into hiding.

I mean yeah, we gotta say something, as this is our hobby. But just say something constructive. We can bash the man, and what he beleives in without having to say "He sucks nutz lolz" or "I hate Jack Thompson OMG!".

We could say something like...

He's a self righteous, ignorant individual who's trying to take the fun out of America's youth by stomping on anything he deems unworthy or just flat out doesn't understand. Where in the reality by all rights the only people in the world that should have this power over our children, are those children's parents. If a child gets ahold of a violent videogame and goes crazy, it's not the game companies fault, but instead the irresponsible parent's fault for letting that child own such a game, knowing that their child could not handle it.

Furthermore, he stresses that it's because of violent video games that the Columbine incident happened, which is a complete load of garbage. Granted one of the two shooters, if not both may have been avid Doom fans, and they may have indeed played Doom with that mental imagination attempt of pretending they were shooting their would be victims. But a few things come into play here. For one the reasons why those shooters did what they did was not because of the influence of a videogame. They were picked up, ignored, bullied, and were immature enough to think that shooting up a school would be the answer to their problems.

Not to mention, had these two individuals had any sort of actual parental interaction, this probably could have, and would have been prevented. And to  take this argument further, if one knows ANYTHING about firearms, and their handling, one knows that Doom in no real shape or form could be used as accurate "training" for an actual shooting.

In conclusion it comes down to the fact that this man is more or less just a biggot on a mission to himself to stamp out what HE deems unworthy for America's youth. When in all reality that decision should be left to and exclusively to the parental units of those children. The first ammendment protects us from foolish men like Jack Thompson, or at least it's supposed to, so let's hope that it continues to do so.

PS: If Jack really wanted to throw a fit about something, he should have targeted the actual columbine simulator free/shareware games spread across the internet. Oh, but he can't, because he has no control over what goes onto the internet? Well then why in the hell should he be able to have any control over what game gets released when?

Thank you.

All that blog post does is tell you to ignore Jack Thompson. It won't work. He'll be back after Bully, believe me.

No matter what you do, idiots like Jack Thompson will be dogging the video game industry as long as they have a breath in their body. You can't ignore him. Ignoring the World Wars didn't exactly work, now did it?

Point made.

You're quite wrong about Jack. Notice how he really didn't come up much at all after the Hot Coffee crap had finally totally died down. He only resurfaced as Bully was nearing release, and people were starting to drag his name back into the game. Gasoline make's fire spread.

Comparing a world war with Thompson isn't in all due respects a just comparrison. A world was was bound to happen, both of them. It wasn't something that was going to be avoided in those circumstances. Jack on the other hand is a different beast altogether. He can be prevented, he can be ignored, and things can move on without him ever pushing his nose further into the business of gaming.

If you all really wanted to do something about Mr. Thompson, you'd make a protest. Take a stand and fight the man legally instead of whining, bitching and complaining like children.

I agree, it was a bit over-exxagerated, but you just said so yourself that they are both bound to happen. And, no, Jack CAN'T be prevented or he'd be gone by now, 'nuff said.

First off, I don't really give a shit what Jack says because he's only banning Bully in Florida. Second, I'm not "bitching, whining, or complaining". It's my right as a person to show my opinion. Jack wants attention so much FINE, he's getting it.

You don't realize that much like a schoolyard bully who seeks attention through misdeeds and violence, when you feed these types of people the attention they crave, you're only further encouraging them to continue doing what they're doing.

The reason Jack came back into the picture was because people DRUG him back in. The man doesn't deserve our attention, and I wish everyone who has a personal vendetta against the man would realize that.

And my point remains, if everyone is so adamant to fight against this man, then they should all drop the immature name calling game and make their stand that of a legal one. Where something may actually be done about it.

Manbearpig, you can spend all day picking apart my posts, but the fact that in this issue I am correct, at least for the most part remains. And I'm not trying to come off a cocky, self righteous prick in saying this. I mean hell, you don't think I don't loathe the man for what he's doing? Did you even bother to view my post above before you starting arguing with me?

I dont think telling people to ignore him either will solve the problem.. not in a forum post anyway. You need a head figure, or even someone representing Rockstar games to come out and say that.

But still, i dont think it'll solve anything..

you got a point there...

its true i see lots of members whining like little bitches, i might have said something about Jack Thompson too but thats changed he CAN be ignored  except by whiners if you really think about it...i dont even post shit about him anymore. whenever i get online i see someone putting up a thread just like today i noticed this thread "Jack is at it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" i mean damn, if u really hate him that much that u even start a thread about him, do something dont talk shit

dont worry Xeo, manbearpig always "tries" to attack what everyone has to say.

(if members on here or anywhere really hate JT as much as they say they do, then they would make a little protest group and support Bully instead of talking shit and whining like little bitches behind a computer screen)

point made.

It doesn't matter. The fact that he's still trying to get this game out of comission makes me mad but trying to stop him won't do anything. Even after Bully is released, he's going to try and keep it out of our hands.

What would I do to shut him up anyway? Protest? Look like one of those faggots trying to get Bully banned? Heck no. Jack Thompson is going to get in deep because of this. I'll let this matter take care of itself.

Yeah, but trying to pull together thousands of kids supporting Bully during a school week to fly over to Flordia and protest Jack Thompson isn't as easy as it sounds.

Believe me, Xeo, if I had the time and the recourses, I would sure as hell go protest Jack Thompson and invite every member on this board to come and help. The fact of the matter is, though, that Jack Thompson is the least of my worries right now with school and all. He's just an elephant in the room I have to get around everyway.

LOOK!

Wired News Finds Bully Short on Violence, Long on Social Commentary
October 10th, 2006
What if the controversy over Bully turned out to have something of a Shakespeare flavor, as in much ado about nothing?

It might happen that way if yesterday’s Wired News report is accurate. Journo Clive Thompson writes about his advance look at Rockstar’s much-discussed new title which is scheduled for an October 17th launch.

Of the bullying and violence which has sparked so much concern that one well-known critic labeled the game a “Columbine simulator,” Thompson writes:

“Bully is… an… intriguing glimpse into the today’s digital politics… It endured a vicious backlash more than year before being released… It turns out the game doesn’t glorify bullying at all. Indeed, it’s almost precisely the opposite… you are not, in fact, intended to be a bully. Instead, most of your early missions involve you defending the helpless… there’s no blood, and… One of the biggest ‘crimes’ is staying out after curfew, or wandering around when you ought to be in class.”

“What the Bully controversy proves is that politicians have never really appreciated the satirical edge of Rockstar’s games. Peel back the hood on the ludic violence, and Rockstar’s games have a surprisingly consistent moral view: Those with power will inevitably abuse it. It is a conclusion that would not displease Thomas Hobbes, or even Thomas Jefferson… (Rockstar) made a game that lets their snarkily clever social commentary shine through.”
