Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: DGAF on September 26, 2006, 05:50:37 AM
Hey, as you may know i'm going to start a Bully related competition soon. I'm going to run it up untill the 10th of October so i have time to get the prize out to the winner before the release of the game and it's likely that i will have to post it 1/2 way round the world  :-P

The reason why i'm asking for idea's is that i want this to be as fair as possible and i dont want people thinking that something dodgy is going on if someone with 300 posts wins it, I want people with 0 posts to have the same chance of winning obviously.

I've thought about asking a question and picking someone at random from the people that give me the right answer but i have no proof that i have picked someone at random... hmm unless i film myself putting all the names in a hat and picking someone at random then post it on here, but that would be umm weird.

Another thing i could ask everyone what they think the total number of the balls added up in the lottery will be on a certain date and then the winner will be the person with the closest number, that way you could all post your prediction up on the board and that way there will be one winner.

Another one is i'm into cryptology and i could post a code or puzzle you have to solve and the first person to mail me the answer wins the prize, but then again some people may think i've given the answer to someone or myself under another username so i don't have to send it to anyone.

Does anyone else have any idea's on a fair competition?

The prize? a unique piece of Bully memorabilia that i have not seen anywhere else. You could say exclusive to Bully-Board.com :D

(some of you may know what i'm talking about if you used to be a member of the old messageboard ;) )

Do this, start it from say, the first of October to the Tenth, and the forumer, to get the most amount of posts in those 10 days, wins. And make a thread were forumers register.

Hows that sound?
Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: DGAF on September 26, 2006, 07:17:14 AM
Hmm not really, it will turn the messageboard into a big pile of spam and one word replies for the sake of getting more posts.

Maybe we could have a countdown or something like from 1000 and then the next person puts 999 then 998 and so on and you could only post after someone else not yourself then the person that eventually types 1 will or 0 will win the pize. Could be a bit boring though and open to fraud if someone has two computers and IP masking.

Hmmm. keep thinking me thinks

Yeah that sounds alright.. but we'd need rules of cause. Like no post whoring - they gotta be like legit posts.. not just a couple of words or something - and no bumping topics just for the sake of getting a better post count. I reckon anyone that does that should automatically throw out of the running..

But whatever.. still brainstorming here.

How about you hide 5 or 6 forum post and threads with some kind of puzzle, like say someone would have to find all 6 to get the complete answer to send to you. This answer could make a sentence and the specific words will be bolded and need to be unscrambled to figure out the sentence whatever it may be and the first person that knows the sentence and sends it to you wins. Just an idea.

I have an idea for a competition, we could play an arcade game picked by DGAF till a certain day, and the member with the highest score at the end of that day wins the competition.

This may seem a crappy idea for a competition, but i can't remember anything else :?

LOL

I was thinking the exact same thing when I looked at this board.

But, in all seriousness, an arcade game like one would be perfect

i dont like the post number# one, for one thing its too boring. I like the random one, its definately fair, if done correctly.puzzles arent good, because some people just dont like, or suck at puzzles.  now, what i was thinking is that we could find an online blackjack game, we could all play it online multiplayer and have a tournament, the reason for blackjack is that its more like a lucky type game instead of skill, plus its easy to learn, or we could do the one about the one where you pick a game, and we could see who scores highest.

either way really, as long as its fair, and everyone can do it, it should be fine.

I think the champion of the arcade games
should win a prize. ( a free Bully game,....

I hope.)

Thats not a bad idea actually.. the arcade hero :p its fair to everyone.. so all you gotta do is hold the most awards for the games. If its a draw then just have a stand off - the first person to get one more award to their belt within a certain time limit.

The only thing i dont like about the arcade idea is that it will get loads of people bashing the games at once and it chomps my bandwidth! It's cool when people are using it now and again but if i get like 20 people using it all day then it will probably knock the site down  :D

Also, some people arn't too good at Arcade games so the comp will be inaccesable to them.

dude do you really need a t-shirt so badly!:p

Nah, i dont think i could find 300 t-shirts and then pay for postage to each and every one of you. Thats probably gonna wipe out my bank account!

You're on the right lines though...

Yeah true but.. we cant be fair to everyone man.. I mean you just gotta do your best. Otherwise they'll always be someone or a couple of people on here that cant do whatevers suggested.. and if they cant play games then they suck big time :p

DGAF, that's obvious... ok, some people aren't too good at Arcade games.

But if you pick another type of competition, of course there are people that aren't good at that too.

And if you think like that, you will never find a competition that pleases every member.

That's why if you want something you have to learn and adapt to the situation, i mean if a member wants to win the competition he will have to learn how to play an arcade game.

So simple as that, learn and adapt to the situation to achieve something.

Hmmm ok, I see what you guys are sayin, but then there's still the bandwidth problem if everyone mashed the arcades at once.

Any other ideas?

Okay, on account of bandwidth arcade is outta the question - thats fine.. Umm.. what about cover design or something? Create the box art for bully or something.

You could solve the bandwidth problem by letting a small group of members try their luck for a day, then in the next day you do the same thing with another small group of members, and so on.

Box art? art isnt my best quality.... shouldnt all the scores reset? i mean if someone (lets just say me) has already a few awards, then they really wouldnt have to do too much. plus it would have to be a new arade game, something thats diff from all these simple arcade games. ooooo, how about every one downloads soldat, and we can have an all out deathmatch to see who wins!!
Title: Idea's for a competition?

No, we should all go on Pawngame, have a deathmatch, and I'd win. lol

Like dgaf was saying, it needs to be fair for
everyone, conserning how well they play the
game or not. Everyone is better at different
things then other people. So... I think (since
it is not possible to pick something that everyone
is equally good at) I think we should take a vote
that lasts up to like 10 days, asking people what
they would rather have the comp. about. Which
ever vote wins, that is what the comp. will be about.
Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: Justin on September 27, 2006, 09:09:43 PM
Well you can't be fair to everyone because everyone has such varied interests and skills, so I have a suggestion that I think every member would at least be able to attempt.

You could require the members to write an essay on a subject relating to the game and the writer of the best essay would win the competition. Some possible subjects include debating problem issues that arise with a game like Bully, creating a fantasy final mission, writing a prologue (introduction) that explains in more detail to why Jimmy is at Bullworth, and writing about how this game will affect the gaming industry.

I actualy considered this for the competition on BF, but I decided to go with something else in the end. At least with the writing, it is something every member could do.
Title: Idea's for a competition?

Yeah sounds alright. Now everyone will at least be able to do that. And if you cant - then you really do suck cause all it is is writing.

They can't write as well as the members that speak english

OMG.. who the hell cares? C'mon guys this is exactly what I'm talking about - it cant be fair to everyone cause then it becomes rediculous. This forum is in English.. so 99-100% of us do speak the language.

I hope you were joking..

Actually, i'm not.

Of course the members that speak english have more developed writing skills, than the members that don't speak english.

I think that's obvious

djrussell, i would like to see you writing a text in portuguese, the language of my country, do you wanna try?????
Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: djrussell on September 28, 2006, 01:21:42 PM
I dont know portuguese - but obviously you know English so whats the big deal?

And everyone here speaks English.. i mean c'mon, if we cant agree that writing out a short story in english is acceptable - then we might as well give up cause there is no way we're ever gonna come to an agreement on anything.

Someone suggests arcade: "oh but im not good at games..", create an alternative Bully cover: "but im no good with graphics".. write a short story on anything bully related: "But what about those that cant speak English?"..

This aint gonna work.
Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: Gui on September 28, 2006, 01:41:55 PM
For example your vocabulary is a lot more developed than mine, so you have an advantage.

I know english, but i don't know enough to write an excellent text, that's what i'm trying to say.

I still think the arcade is a better solution, videogames are universal.

And if people are registered in this forum is because they like videogames, and they must have some sort of gaming skills.
Title: Idea's for a competition?
Post by: Manbearpig on September 28, 2006, 02:55:32 PM
Yeah, but you can cheat at those arcade games. For example, in Simon, do you really think I memorized all of those colors? No.

I wrote them down on a piece of paper and quit when I was bored.

For the skill games, Speedgear is the big cheat mod thing. It allows you to go faster while other components (the time in Crazy Closet, for example) are at a slowed pace. It would be so easy to just download it and own everyone else's score.

Post by: Manbearpig on September 28, 2006, 02:59:04 PM
Going along with what Justin said, why don't we write an essay about who should deserve the free Bully memorabilia?

I mean, it wouldn't be that hard even if you don't speak English.

Don't complain either. Everyone here can at least type English, shown by your obvious posting on the board. Besides, I go to Spanish every day and speak in a different language. I'm a novice when it comes to writing in Spanish, but I can do enough to get an A.

You should too.

(Sorry for double post)

If somebody doesn't like the poll's decision they are always free to leave the forum, nobody is forcing them to be here.

Same thing with the presidential elections, if you don't like the new president you have 2 options: you can shut up and accept the decision or you leave the country, you don't start bullshit.

So simple as that :D

I'm not saying you shouldn't stand up for yourself, everybody wants a different type of competition, and that is making this competition hard to realize.

That's why a poll about the type of competition would solve all this problems.

If the poll about the competition goes ahead, you're already standing up for yourself when you vote, cuz you're making a difference and giving your opinion.

Jesus, all this shit about the competition makes me sound like a fucking presidential candidate :x

Yeah, but if we do it, then it will cause a lot of flaming. One guy will be like: "OMG THATZ A DUMB IDEA." Then another guy will be like: "OMFG SHUT THE FUCKZ UP UR A DUMASS!!!!111"

If we just let DGAF choose, then we won't have a board wasting space and it can just be done with a snap of the fingers.

Ok guys thanks for all the replies, i think some of the idea's were a little time consuming and i want to get this prize out before the release of the game, maybe  should have organized it a little earlier:rolleyes:

It was always going to be tough to chose the right one but i have done, its probably the most simplest one and accesable to everyone on the board and rule out any unfair advantage.

The competition will open on Monday and end on Saturday afternoon, The prize, which i will post pics of on Monday will be posted to the winner on the following monday or as soon as i get a postal adress.

Thanks for your help people. stay tuned. ;)
