Location: The Library
Reward: The Spud gun

Ask the nerds about Earnest's whereabouts. Pummel them for information.

Jump over the gates. Along the path, the nerds are firing bottle rockets. Oohh, a new item! Take their Spud Gun once they're down.

Earnest and the Spud Cannon
Before you can enter through the guarded gate, Earnest, using the Spud Cannon, will do his best to stop your advances. The Spud Cannon hits hard and comes out in rapid bursts. Take cover behind the boulder, the pillars.

If you take a hit, there are a couple cans of Beam Cola around.

Here's your attack plan. Advance to the front, while using the pillars and rocks as cover. At the front of the gate, run to the right, to the corner. From the corner, the Spud Cannon can't reach you. It's basic geometry: the angle of the gun's trajectory can't reach you if you're directly below it...and it helps when there is a pillar in the path of the gun, which blocks the spuds.  Using your Spud gun, aim at the transformer from FPS view.Same deal as before. Your goal is to destroy the two panels alongside Earnest.

Head to the front. Hide behind a pillar, then run to the front when Earnest pauses his shooting spree. At the front, behind a pillar, select your slingshot and go into FPS mode. It takes three shots to destroy a panel.

Instead of using his canon, Earnest will throw a pack of firecrackers, which has an insane blast radius. The key to survival is to get outside of the blast radius.
Facing the Spud Cannon, go the outer left, where you'll be outside of his blast radius. Here, you'll circumvent all explosions. Standing here, use your slingshot to shoot down the panels.
Hide to the right, behind the farthest pillar from the cannon. Here, you can shoot -- while standing -- the panels, without fear of the spuds hitting you. Look at the screenshot below for further explanations.

This one was fun but hard in the beginning when trying to break down the door. what i did was when the nerds come to snipe you away from the spud cannon. i disengaged and shot them with my bottle rocket launcher it makes it much easier

The best thing to do is disengage the spud cannon, then use either the bottle rocket launcher, or I used my slingshot. If you pull it to full stretch, itll knock em out in 1 shot
Title: what are these panels ezzackly?

I've got into Earnest's stronghold and shot out all the red lights but nothing he keeps firing potatos and nothing changes.  Am I supposed to be shooting at something else as well?

You have to destroy the transformer(which is the red light), and it goes into a cutscene where the nerd gets off the spud cannon, giving you the chance to advance to the next part of the mission.

Yep i thought this mission was very easy, just max up your slingshot and one shot (sometimes 2) will knock out the nerds easy.. and when you come to the gate, just hide behind a stone, max up your slingshot and target the light, then when he finishes shooting, you got like 2-3 seconds to quickly duck out, shoot it once, then duck back behind the stone. Do this like 3-4 times and you get in

How do you get the spud gun, every gun I found for this mission (stronghold assault) was a fire cracker launcher?

This first mission of Chapter IV can be found in front of the Library.  It's
official, Petey has been rejected by everyone, including the Nerds.  He
recommends to you that you get Earnest, the Nerd leader, on your side to
help get back at the jocks.  Sounds like a great idea, but you have to do a
little convincing first.  Head to the archway at the entrance to the library
and try to talk to the Nerds gathered there to find out where Earnest is.
They aren't talking, so give them a little beating, but don't knock them out
and they will soon be giving up the location.  Earnest is in the observatory
and it's not going to be easy to get to him.  Jump over the broken wall to
the right of the Library and meet up with Tad.  He's got the key code to the
gate behind him and he's not going to give it up without a beating either,
so get the code from him and enter the gate.  When you are through the gate,
you have to follow the path to get to the observatory, but the path is
peppered with Nerds who will be trying to stop you.  Make your way carefully
along the path with your Bottle Rocket Launcher armed and keep the targeting
button pressed.  Take out the nerds as they appear.  They will also be
armed with the BRL, so you can replenish your ammo from the downed Nerds.
You'll also be crawling over three barricades along the way.  Just hop over
each of them and keep your eyes peeled when you get to the other side.
After the third barricade you will be approaching the observatory.  Take out
the last couple of Nerds that head your way and all you'll have left to deal
with is Earnest and his Spud Cannon that he has perched above the gate to
the observatory.  The Spud Cannon can do some serious damage to you, so
avoid it all costs.  Use the brief pauses while Earnest reloads to dart
between the rocks and work your way closer to the gate.  Get to the rocks
closest to the gate on the left side (the gate should be to your right as
you look at it).  Up on a pole near the Spud Cannon, you'll see a red light
where the transformer is.  That red light is your target.  Go into scope
mode with your Super Slingshot and charge up a shot.  When Earnest pauses to
reload, back up enough to get the light in your sight and take it out.  This
will open the gate and cause Earnest to leave the Spud Cannon and run away.
Now it's your turn to play with the big toy.  Enter the gate and run up the
stairs to the right to get on the Spud Cannon.  You've got to bust down the
doors of the observatory with the cannon and the great part about it is that
you don't have to reload like Earnest did.  It has non stop unlimited ammo!
The doors of the observatory will have a "health bar" at the top of the
screen.  All you have to do is keep pounding the doors with the cannon until
the health bar runs out.  Nerds will appear in the balconies and windows of
the observatory to shoot bottle rockets at you.  Turn the cannon on them
occasionally and blow them away and return your focus back to the doors.
When the health meter is gone, the doors are gone and the mission is
complete.  You will automatically begin the next level.

note : I borrowed this from a walkthrough

Time to take the jocks down a peg or two. Petey tells you you'll need the nerds' help and to acquire that, you'll need to talk to Earnest. But where is he? There's a couple nerds hanging around outside the library. Ask them nicely about Earnest's whereabouts.

Now ask not nicely. Just don't knock him out. Unconscious nerds can't spill the beans. Oh, he's at the observatory. Why didn't you say so?

Grab the ruler that's lying on the ground, hop the wall into the alley beside the library, and beat the gate code out of Thad. Go through the gate and hop the barricade. Take out the Firecracker chucking nerds from afar with your charged up Slingshot. Hop over the next barricade and repeat. Watch out for the nerd hiding behind the rock on the right. He might sneak up behind you. Keep your eye on the radar so you know where everyone is.

Mosey on into the next area and take out the snipers. Just keep hitting the Lock On Button to locate threats quickly. Soon you'll approach the main gate of the observatory.

Okay, Earnest has been watching too much American Gladiators. Work your way up to the gate using the columns as cover from the Spud Cannon. Move when Earnest stops to reload. Make sure you take out the two nerds by the gate. Once you're directly under the Spud Cannon, Earnest can't hit you. Look to the left of the Cannon and you'll see a transformer with a glowing red light. Hit that with your Slingshot.

The observatory gates are now open. Go inside, run up the stairs to your right and man the Spud Cannon. Time to give the nerds a taste of their own medicine. Concentrate your fire on the observatory's front doors. Nerds will take pot shots at you from windows and the balcony but they don't do a lot of damage. If they're bugging you or your health is low, turn the cannon on them. When the doors buckle under the pressure of potato projectiles, abandon the Cannon and go on in.

Amazingly, Earnest still doesn't want to be your friend. Force him to see the light. Hide behind a column while he shoots his spare Spud Cannon at you. He reloads after four shots. When he does, pop out and shoot the generators behind him. They'll take about three shots each.

When the generators are destroyed the catwalk collapses and Earnest moves to another area. He's lost his Spud Cannon but he has double fistfuls of Firecrackers to hurl at you. Dodge the explosives as best you can and shoot out the two new generators quickly. Get Soda out of the crates lying around if you need it.

Two more generators down and one more catwalk destroyed. Earnest is on his last catwalk but he's found his Spud Cannon again. Hide behind the columns and pop out to shoot the generators when he reloads after every three shots. Destroy the final two generators and Earnest will give up the fight and give you his Spud Cannon.

This is my favorite mission in the game probably. It's amazing because it's 1 of the hardest but yet it's easy, goes to show how easy the game is in general. The only tough time I had was when I got inside the building with Earnest and he was radically throwing something at me.

This is one of the few missions in the game I had trouble with.  While firing the spud cannon, the nerds do alot of damage to you.  I could never tell when I was getting hit, and rarely noticed that my health meter was in the red.

Using the slingshot to kill the nerds on the ground should allow you beat them while taking minimal damage.  In my experience, the last two you beat prior to accessing the Spud Cannon will leave at least one soda.  Save it, and jump down from the cannon later if needed.

I thought it was difficult at first too. Luckily, I got really good at it. ;)

The soda technique works well.

If you throw a stink bomb at Earnest while he's on the spud cannon. He'll stop shooting and when the stink goes away, he'll run around in circles until he's out of breath, he catches his breath and repeats until you knock him out, or destroy the transformer. Either way he disappears. But it's hilarious watching him run around like an idiot.
